Students will benefit by taking high school algebra or MAT 0028 prior to enrolling in this course. This course, designed to meet the General Education Requirements for non-science majors, is designed especially for students who wish to gain an understanding of the fundamental nature of physical science from the chemical point of view. The treatment utilizes an approach to scientific concepts and methods, stressing and illustrating principles rather than merely listing phenomena. This course will require proctored testing at an approved location. Students may be charged testing fees at off-campus and virtual testing locations. Textbook Information:
You have several options for purchasing the textbook. All chemistry course content centers on each chapter section in the text.   You purchase the text (and materials)  to complete the chemistry content requirements:
 
1. You may purchase a loose-leaf book in a binder without the Access codes for under $50 from a former student.
2. You may purchase the International softback version on line from International book sales for approximately $72. 
3. You may rent the book from any source.
4. You may purchase or rent a soft back hard copy test from any source
5. You need to have purchased, borrowed, or rented a book to give you permission to view the videos,
which replace the lecture for online students.
6. If you purchase an e-book for your cell phone, pad or laptop during proctored open book exams the professor will have hard copy text for the student to use during open book proctored exams either in class or in the test center. This will be explained why to the class during the first week.
The bookstore has the following option:
1. Purchase a new softback test for $218;
2. Buy used fro
m the bookstore the text for $163;
3. Rent the text hard copy $87.20; or
4. rent the text digital $51.25.
Have this done no later than the week of class January 13, 2020.

We will not be using the Mastering Chemistry software
Fall 2019 term or Spring Term 2020 or Summer 2020.

Students need complete at least two chapters per week.

However, due to our strange circumstances I have put the deadline for all the Weekly Video and end-of-Chapter (EoC) test for chapters 1-6 the first week of June when the midterms must be completed.

Editorial Review:  .....The movie spends a great deal of time covering the scientific procedures of the high-pressure investigation, and the rising tensions between scientists who have been forced to work in claustrophobic conditions.

All Chapter Online End-of-Chapter Exams  are open from May 4th through June 23rd. All online End-of-Chapter Exams should be completed weekly as assigned.

Weeks 1 through 7 + Completion Days All  Online Students will complete the chapter vocabulary exams for all 17 chapters. Word list for each chapter are located at the end of each chapter and in Canvas Vocabulary Module.

All Online Students will complete the open book chapter vocabulary quizzes for all 17 chapters. The exams will be worth 8-16 points with 8-16 fill-in-the-blank terms. The words must be exactly as the word list at the end of each chapter, but may be case sensitive. Unlimited attempts, highest grade counts, No time Limit. Report all answer errors to the instructor**

** Please notify the instructor via email of this error stating the exact term from the chapter and what the error is to have the test points adjusted manually

Final Grade Based on Total Earned Points (Points subject to change)

The class is based on Total Points, approximately 2000 give or take +/-(100 to 200). However, the total points may decrease which may change the minimum number of points for an A; a B, and a C (not higher only lower)

Incomplete Grade:
It must be requested following the guideline set by the college. Students who do not finish by June 23rd must speak with the instructor about extension of time. Grades will be submitted 25th.

Late / Make Up Work

Communication via Email  All email must have the designated code to begin the SUBJECT.
The Subject Code for this section: A7T  (for example Subject: A7T: First Email)

All Activities and Testing should be completed as scheduled and all test and makeups must be completed by noon on June 25th (The 7 week term ends June  23rd.  June 25th will be the A-7 term grade deadline. June 22nd and 23rd are now called completion days (replaces the old final exam days). Traditionally grades are usually due at 10 pm two days after the last day of completion.

The Midterm exam must be completed by the June 8th, 

The 1st week explorations must be completed by May 12th. After May 12th (or the day the points are posted in  Canvas) will earn no points.

Students SHOULD Complete at least  two chapters per week to finish.

Each chapter take several hours of study and testing

You can not do 14 chapters in one week.

It is up to the student to set her/his own personal weekly deadlines to finish 14 chapters in seven weeks.

The professor has programmed Canvas so that all chapter testing must be completed by midnight on the final day of the term.

Required and Optional Chapter projects are also due no later than June 23rd.

Again the students needs to budget her/his time to finish on time.

Gateway Criteria:

In every class, a few students take advantage of the professor’s philosophy of open book, open notes, etc. while completing each chapter’s test. The professor wants the student to succeed by allowing unlimited attempts, not time limit, and highest grade counts toward the total points earned.  In campus based classes, weekly closed book EoC short answer test are administered. Comparing the grades from the weekly in-class proctored test, i.e. 4 out of 30, yet perfect scores on the online exercises in record time indicates cheating, or a form of it.

 

It is considered cheating to copy an online question, pasting into Google (or other search engine), and getting an instant answer.  I state in class, that every test bank for every chemistry book has been posted on the Internet. Therefore students have instant answers to every question my 200+ p[ools of questions.

 

The professor has the ability in Canvas to review every test a student completes. When looking at a test, it is obvious a student is cheating when he or she looks at the question, leaves Canvas for a few seconds, 10-30. Then the student inputs the correct answer. The student does this over and over on a test. The student can complete a 10 to 20 question test in three to seven minutes….

THEREFORE THE GATEWAY CRITERIA HAS BEEN ADOPTED FOR THIS CLASS

A Student must make 60% or better on the closed book midterms and end terms if the video or EoC, or vocabulary test scores are above 90%. (The is 36 correct out of 60).

A student must score at least 55% on the Gateway exams, the chapter test score if 80% or higher.(33 out of 60) earning a B final grade. Likewise the student must score 50% (30 correct) if the student is earning a C on the weekly chapter test. 40% for a D.

If a student does not achieve the Gateway criteria on the proctored exams, then the online test scores in that category will be lowered to the point levels of the Gateway.

For example a student who is scoring 95% on the EoC online test for chapters 1-6, scores 30 out of 80 questions (37.5%) on the Midterm Proctored Multiple Choice Exam will have the Chapter EoC test scores lowered to lowered to 12 out of 30 (37.5%) for each of the six chapter weekly EoC test.

The midterm/End Term MC test are closed book online proctored. No cell phones are allowed. No books or notes allowed. The student once starting the test, is not allowed to leave the test until completed.

The Vocabulary Midterm/End Term exams are also closed book, no cell phones allowed and are unlimited attempts, not time limit (2 hrs max in test center) and highest score counts. The student will be allowed a chapter by chapter word list for the fill-in-the-blank exam.

 Until the week of the midterm and the end term exams, the Gateway exams are open for students to practice. The scores will count in the total points. The test will be removed and a new similar test will be available in the proctored environment during the scheduled week.

The Professor believes in Mastery Learning.

 Four closed-book proctored Unit exams and a Final like most classes would be so much easier for the Professor to administer would make his job sooooo.. much easier, but the results for a lot of students would be devastated and not pass.,
