Students will benefit by taking high school algebra or MAT 0028 prior to enrolling in this course. This course, designed to meet the General Education Requirements for non-science majors, is designed especially for students who wish to gain an understanding of the fundamental nature of physical science from the chemical point of view. The treatment utilizes an approach to scientific concepts and methods, stressing and illustrating principles rather than merely listing phenomena.

Instructional Materials and Equipment

You have several options for purchasing the textbook. All chemistry course content centers on each chapter section in the text.   You purchase the text (and materials)  to complete the chemistry content requirements:
1. You may purchase a loose-leaf book in a binder without the Access codes for under $50 from a former student.
2. You may purchase the International softback version on line from International book sales for approximately $72. 
3. You may rent the book from any source.
4. You may purchase or rent a soft back hard copy test from any source
5. You need to have purchased, borrowed, or rented a book to give you permission to view the videos,
which replace the lecture for online students.

The bookstore has the following option:
1. Purchase a new softback test for $218;
2. Buy used fro
m the bookstore the text for $163;
3. Rent the text hard copy $87.20; or
4. rent the text digital $51.25.

Have this done no later than the first day of class January 7, 2019.
If you purchase the ala-cart package for $170+ you get the use of the e-book and receive a loose-leaf notebook hard copy, plus the Mastering Chemistry access code.
You do not have the option to sell the materials back to the bookstore if you drop the class or finish the class by the end of the semester. Once you have broken the shrink wrapped sealed package it is yours.(No Return)
We will not be using the Mastering Chemistry software Spring 2019 term. Keep it unopened and you may resell it online for between $25-$75

Analysis of the Movie Film: Andromeda Strain – 1971

Editorial Review:  .....The movie spends a great deal of time covering the scientific procedures of the high-pressure investigation, and the rising tensions between scientists who have been forced to work in claustrophobic conditions.

  It's all very fascinating if you're interested in scientific method and technological advances, although the film is obviously dated in many of its details......

5. Complete all End of Chapter Multiple Choice Quizzes Outlined in the Chapter Study Packs found Blackboard's Course Information Folder. There are over 60 small quizzes for 11 of the 15 required chapters.


All Quizzes are Open January 7th through April 30. All online End of Chapter quizzes must be completed by April 30th*.

Week 16 - Completion Days All Students will complete the end of chapter vocabulary quizzes for all 17 chapters. Word list for each chapter are located at the end of each chapter.

The words must be exactly as the word list at the end of each chapter, but are not case sensitive. Unlimited attempts, highest grade counts, Report all answer errors to the instructor**

All 17 chapter Vocabulary quizzes are open from January 7th through April 30th. All online Chapter Vocabulary  quizzes must be completed by April 30th*.

Final Grade Based on Total Earned Points (Points subject to change)

The class is based on Total Points, approximately 1000 give or take +/-(25 to 50). Take the Total Possible and an A will be 87% (870) ; B will be 76% (760) However, the total points may increase or decrease which may change the minimum number of points for an A; a B, and a C (not higher only lower)

Course Evaluation is optional: 20 extra credit points (10 Points FSCJ & 10 points Rate My Professor). These surveys are anonymou1. Students must notify via email that they have submitted the course/instructor evaluation by make a screen print of the popup box stating the task has been completed. (Do not send a copy of the survey to your instructor). The FSCJ evaluation window is open to the student during the last two weeks of the term and may not be completed after a final grade has been assigned (March 1). Your instructor may not see your survey until after the final grades have been submitted to the college (March 1).

FN Grade - Failure for Non-Attendance

Incomplete grade: It must be requested following the guideline set by the college. Students who do not finish by April 30th must speak with the instructor about extension of time. Grades will be submitted May 2nd.

Late / Make Up Work

Communication via Email  All email must have the designated code to begin the SUBJECT.
The Subject Code for this section: A15  (for example Subject: A15: First Email)

All Activities and Testing remain Open until 11:59 pm April 30th therefore there is no late work (The 15 week term ends April 30th.  The April 30th day assumes May 2nd will be the A-15 term grade deadline.April 29th and April 30th are now called completion days (replaces the old final exam days). Traditionally grades are usually due at 10 pm two days after the last day of completion.

The Midterm exam must be completed by the end of Spring Break (March 17) for full credit. After March 17th, the grade will be adjusted manually to 50% of the earned score.

The 1st week explorations must be completed by January 14th. Submission after January 14th (or the day the points are posted in  Blackboard) will earn no points. Likewise the Scientific Method project option must be completed by January 21st to earn full credit otherwise a 20% penalty will be assessed for the work being completed after January 21st or the day after the 21st when the instructor post the grade in Blackboard

Students SHOULD Complete at least one to two chapters per week to finish. Each chapter take several hours of study and testing. You can not do 15 chapters in one week. It is up to the student to set her/his own personal weekly deadlines and assume the professor has programmed Blackboard that the chapter must be completed by midnight on that weekly due date.

The student will notice that the due date for all online testing is August 23rd. Because there are so many 2-4 question short testing, a student who qualifies for an incomplete final grade will be able to continue working after February 26th, but must be done no later than the end of the Summer Term 2019.

Please note the college will terminate using Blackboard after the conclusion of Summer Term 2019, and will switch to the Learning Management System (LMS) Canvas, which is the LMS used at UNF.

Required Projects have a a five day grace period from due date before deemed late; 6-14 days 50% penalty; over two weeks no grade-work not accepted.Optional Projects have a deadline of February 27th. Deadlines are two weeks after the scheduled required chapters are to have been completed. Almost All projects are optional except Project #2 Gasoline which is due until the last day of the term

Optional Chapter projects are due on February 26th.
